STEM + ART = STEAM!
Our proprietorial curriculum incorporates creativity and artistic elements to every challenge for a true STEAM experience.
STEM Education and MORE
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is a big buzzword in education of late. It has, after all, been tied to ensuring our children’s future in the 21st century marketplace and to the future of our society on the local, national and global levels. Both private and public sectors report that 21st-century workers require skills that many of today’s graduates don’t have. Students need more in-depth knowledge of math and science, plus the ability to integrate and apply that knowledge to solve the challenges facing our nation. Children who study a STEM curriculum also develop a variety of skills that are essential for success: critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, communication, collaboration, and entrepreneurship, to name a few.
But many educational experts, including us at Challenge Island, believe that STEM is incomplete without the additional of an “A” for art. In fact many would say that STEAM is the new STEM.Register Now!
STEM EDUCATION AND THE ARTS
At Challenge Island STEM and the arts naturally go hand in hand – from the background music to the art supply boxes in our tribal treasure chests to the amazing aesthetic touches our students add to their functional creations.
Here’s a closer look at how Challenge Island brings STEAM to kids:
Science: Chemistry, physical science, earth science, and life sciences are incorporated into our challenges in our trademark child-friendly ways.
Technology: Challenge Island requires kids to use their innate creativity and analytical skills to develop a workable solution to a problem.
Engineering: The Challenge Island Totem Pole is the backbone of each lesson and is actually the engineering process in action!
Art: Challenge Island is as much about function as it is about form. Every treasure chest has an art set and additional challenge-specific artistic mediums are provided. The Challenge Island music playing in our classrooms, helps our students channel their artistic sides.
Math: Every Challenge Island lesson incorporates various math concepts, such as estimating, weighing, measuring, counting, geometry, and time.Register Now!
Traditionally, school subjects have been presented in isolation: Kids learn math for an hour then reading for the next then social studies after that. But at Challenge Island, we believe that learning is more much exciting and meaningful when many disciplines are swirled together into one colossally cool cross – curricular island! A visit to Time Machine Island for example has kids traveling back to ancient Egypt where they learn about mummies and craft some of their own. They write their names in hieroglyphics and learn about the geometric power of the mighty triangle before engineering Egyptian style pyramids to house their tribal treasures. And that’s just one of hundreds of cross-curricular destinations children visit with Challenge Island!Register Now!
